About the archives
About the Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives:
The Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives is a project by the Contemporary Art Foundation In Situ, that would not have been possible without the trust and substantive support of Mrs Maria Kieślowska, who made available archival resources from the private family collection.
The Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives will focus its efforts on compiling, digitizing, preserving and making available the archival materials related to the life and work of the eminent Polish director and screenwriter.
The institution specializes in compiling and digitizing archival materials, as well as securing source materials. The goals of ATKK include the initiation of research and art projects, based in cooperation, and utilizing the available resources, as well as exhibition and publishing activities.
The long term goals of The Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives include co-operations with cultural and art institutions, museums, libraries and film schools.
The team developing The Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives consists of eminent scholars of his work, the director’s coworkers and friends. Particularly noteworthy is the mentorship of Stanisław Zawiśliński – journalist, writer, director and screenwriter of documentary films, awarded in 2008 by the Polish Film Institute for a series of biographical books about Krzysztof Kieślowski.
The first materials we make available are digitized photographs from his family archive, photographs from his time at the theater techniques high-school in Warsaw and Lodz Film School, photographs taken by Krzysztof Kieślowski during his study in Film School, as well as a selection of publicity stills for his movies, and a collection of Polish and international awards and distinctions the director and screenwriter received for his achievements in cinema.
The Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives is located in Sokołowsko. Here he lived in the years 1951-1957 with his parents and sister. The local movie theater had a great influence on the life of the future director.
Sokołowsko has a long tradition as a health resort treating pulmonary diseases, and Roman Kieślowski suffering from tuberculosis – the director’s father - was treated here. Kieślowski recalled his time here in his 1974 documentary movie „X-ray”.
In recent years in the movie theater „Zdrowie” film screenings take place as part of The Sokołowsko Film Festival Hommage a Kieślowski, an annual festival held since 2011 by the Contemporary Art Foundation In Situ dedicated to the work of Kieślowski.
The Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives’s website will be systematically adding more compiled archival materials, information about the resources as well as announcements and accounts of the events that take place in cooperation with The Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives.
ATKK partners are the Film School in Lodz, Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television
University of Silesia in Katowice, the Film Museum, TOR Film Production and Wydawnictwo Skorpion.
A part of the resources located on the site was subject to archival and digitization work done in 2013 as part of the „Archiwistyka Społeczna” program of the National Audiovisual Institute. Current work is possible thanks to funding by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
